3rd Grade
Welcome to 3rd Grade!
We are so excited to be in third grade at our new school! We even have a new playground that the third graders play on all by themselves at recess! Third Grade is a very exciting year. It is a very important year where many changes happen. In third grade, students become very independent and responsible. Students will not only be taught reading, math, science, and Paragon in my class. They will also learn to be self sufficient. Students are expected to be able to follow directions, respect others, stay organized, copy their homework and notes, bring important paper work to and from school, and control their behavior. I have a behavior plan in my class that encourages my students to make good choices. It also makes them responsible for accepting consequences. Students are expected to work independently on many assignments. Third grade is a transition year. It is a goal for my third graders to leave as independent and self sufficient children ready for the challenges of fourth grade!
- Miss Lyons, 3rd Grade Teacher
From the third grade:
In reading, we read wonderful stories dealing with imagination, friendship, money, city life, country life, and story telling. We don’t just take turns reading out loud every day. We like to keep it interesting! Sometimes we listen to the stories on CD and we write in our notebooks what we think is going to happen next. We also read in groups and answer the questions our teacher asks us together. It is so fun. Our teacher gives us fun creative writing assignments or art projects to do that go with our stories.
Math class is great. We have so many great tools to work with to make us understand all of our new concepts. Miss Lyons allows us plenty of time to play fun math board games and games that she makes up. We play them in groups.
In science class, we do fun experiments. We learn about weather, the water cycle, animals, the solar system, rocks, and much more! Along with experiments, we also do writing and art projects to go along with what we are learning about.
Paragon is such a fun and interesting class. We learn so much! The focus of 3rd grade Paragon is studying how culture spreads. We’ve watched culture grow around a river, build along the Silk Road, and travel to different parts of the world with the first explorers. In Paragon we work a lot in groups and we do a lot of art projects. We are able to use many different art supplies in Paragon like clay and paint. Sometimes, we even get to try different foods from the countries that we are studying. It’s great when our teachers get together to teach us a big Paragon lesson. Sometimes Mrs. Gravine and other teachers come in to help with big projects.
We learn so much in our school but we also do a lot of things that are just special for third grade. Miss Lyons reads us awesome chapter books that may be too hard for us to read on our own. We have homework parties where whoever does their homework for the month attends a movie party in Miss Lyon’s classroom. We can earn rewards for good behavior like picking from a prize bucket, homework passes, bringing in a show and tell, reading our favorite book to the class, or eating lunch with Miss Lyons.
